Garmisch-Partenkirchen is a great place from which to explore southern Germany. It is located in the German Alps, just a few miles from the border with Austria, which we visited quite a bit. With these mountains comes rain, particularly in the summer.

In the Garmisch-Classic hiking, climbing and ski area, there are numerous possibilities for excursions and activities for families, seniors as well as hobby and professional athletes. In summer as well as in winter, the Osterfelderkopf and Kreuzeck mountains are easily accessible via the cable cars of Bayerische Zugspitzbahn Bergbahn AG.

First, a little history on the Garmisch-Partenkirchen area: At one time, Garmisch and Partenkirchen were two separate towns for many centuries. However, in 1935 the two towns were forced by Adolf Hitler to join as one in anticipation of the 1936 Winter Olympics. Although the two towns have been joined since 1935, they are both distinctly different.

Garmisch-Partenkirchen is one of the busiest year-round holiday destinations in the Bavarian Alps.
